Second Hive Builder Programme - Grow Your Own Second Colony
Grow Your Second Colony — A Confident Step Toward Self-Sufficient Beekeeping
This service is designed for beekeepers who are ready to grow from one colony to two, and who want to do so calmly, deliberately, and with a clear understanding of the process.
Creating a second colony is one of the most important milestones in beekeeping. Done at the right time and in the right way, it builds confidence and lays the foundations for more independent beekeeping in the seasons ahead.
Why This Step Matters
Many beekeepers reach a point where their first colony is thriving, but taking the next step feels uncertain. Timing, swarm pressure, and queen management can all feel like unknowns.
This service exists to provide a clear, supportive pathway through that moment, turning colony expansion from a leap of faith into a well-planned progression.
The Approach
The method used mirrors how colonies naturally divide. A controlled split is used to create a second colony, while the original hive is requeened in a planned and gentle way.
- Prepare your colony as spring strength builds
- Create a second colony using a calm, controlled split
- Requeen the parent colony with a carefully timed introduction
- Finish the season with two settled, productive colonies
The focus is not on speed or maximising numbers, but on understanding what is happening and why the method works.
What’s Included
- One high-quality mated queen supplied at the appropriate point in the season
- Access to clear preparation and split guidance, released in stages
- A simple, time-based framework designed for first-time colony expansion
- One replacement queen if acceptance does not succeed when the guidance is followed
What Self-Sufficient Beekeeping Looks Like
Self-sufficiency in beekeeping is not about doing everything alone. It is about understanding key moments well enough to act with confidence.
By the end of this process, the recipient will have a clearer understanding of:
- When a colony is ready to be divided
- How splitting can naturally reduce swarm pressure
- How and when to introduce a new queen successfully
- How to approach colony increase again in future seasons
Queen Acceptance Guarantee
To support confidence at this important stage, one replacement queen will be supplied at no additional cost if the original queen is not accepted despite following the provided method and timing.
This guarantee applies to a single replacement and is intended to support the learning process during planned colony expansion.
A Physical Gift Card, Delivered by Post
This product is supplied as a physical gift card, posted directly to you or to the recipient.
The card is printed on high-quality stock and presented as a keepsake that can be given in person. It explains the experience and confirms that a mated queen and guided support are included.
A unique access code on the card allows the recipient to activate the service and receive guidance at the appropriate time in the season.
Who This Is Designed For
- Beekeepers with one established colony ready to grow to two
- Those looking for a calm, supported route to their first split
- Anyone who wants to learn a repeatable method, not just complete a one-off task
- Gift buyers supporting a beekeeper’s next step
A Note on Timing
Beekeeping follows the season. Guidance for this service is released ahead of the spring build-up, when colonies begin to approach readiness and the information is most useful.
No immediate action is required on purchase.
Queen availability is seasonal and subject to conditions.
