National Nucs — Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in a National nuc?

Each nuc is a 6-frame National nucleus colony in a brand-new poly nuc (Paynes or Abelo), typically with 3–4 frames of brood, frames of pollen and capped honey, and a UK-mated, marked queen.

Which queen lines do you supply?

We specialise in calm, productive Buckfast queens (UK-mated). Availability of other lines can vary by season.

Are National nucs compatible with WBC hives?

Yes. WBC brood boxes take British Standard National frames, so you can transfer frames straight across without adaptors.

Do National nucs fit Flow Hive brood boxes?

No. For Flow Hives you need Langstroth-frame nucs. See our Langstroth page: Langstroth Nucs for Flow Hive.

When are National nucs available?

Overwintered from April, Spring from May, and Summer from June (weather-dependent). We’ll confirm your dispatch window at least two weeks before shipping.

How are nucs delivered or collected?

UK-wide via Royal Mail Special Delivery by 1pm or collection in Dorset by arrangement. Nucs travel in ventilated poly boxes with entrances secured for safe transit.

What hygiene and health checks do you follow?

Colonies are raised under NBU-aligned biosecurity, disease-checked, and Varroa-managed prior to dispatch. Frames and foundation are fresh to support a clean start.

How do I install a National nuc?

Install during mild, settled weather. Follow our step-by-step guide: How to Install a Nucleus Colony. We’re happy to advise on frame order, feeding, and first inspections.

Do you offer support after purchase?

Yes — phone & email support plus scheduled Teams calls if needed. We also provide practical handouts (install checklist, first-week plan, inspection notes).

What if there’s an issue on arrival?

We stand behind a live-arrival promise. If something isn’t right, contact us within 24 hours with photos/video so we can help and resolve quickly.

Overwintered vs Spring vs Summer — which should I choose?

Overwintered (Apr): fastest early build-up.
Spring (May): popular for beginners; long season ahead.
Summer (Jun): great for later starts or apiary expansion. See our comparison above for more detail.

Do you reuse old frames or boxes?

No — nucs are supplied in new poly boxes with fresh frames and foundation to reduce disease risk and give the colony a clean start.
