Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we’re asked most about ordering queens and nucleus colonies (nucs), delivery, deposits, and our bee stock. If you can’t find what you need, contact us.

When will nucs be ready for collection or delivery?
Overwintered nucs are typically ready in April, spring nucs in May, and summer nucs in June. Exact timing depends on weather and colony progress. We’ll confirm your window once your order is placed and keep you updated as we approach your date.
How long does it take to receive my order once dispatched?
We use Royal Mail Special Delivery for queens and posted nucs. Delivery is usually by 1 pm the next working day after dispatch. Remote areas may take a little longer; your tracking will show the latest ETA.
Do you deliver nucs and queens?
Queens: Posted nationwide via Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Nucs: Available for collection in Dorset or insured courier to most UK postcodes (weather-dependent). We’ll advise the safest option for your order.
Do you deliver established or full hives?
We don’t courier full hives. For safety and welfare, these are collection-only or can be delivered/installed locally in Dorset by arrangement (additional fee). Please get in touch to discuss.
Can I collect Paynes nucs in person?
Yes. Collection is from Dorset at a scheduled time. Bring a bee suit, a ventilated vehicle, and tie-downs/straps to secure the box.
Do you provide tracking for deliveries?
Yes. We’ll email your Royal Mail tracking number as soon as your order is dispatched, so you can monitor progress in real time.
What happens if I miss my Royal Mail delivery?
Royal Mail will attempt delivery and may leave a card or take the parcel to your local delivery office. For live bees, we recommend collecting the same day. If you need help, contact Royal Mail with your tracking and let us know so we can advise next steps.
Can nucs or queens be delivered at the weekend?
Queens: Saturday Special Delivery is usually possible (Royal Mail area-dependent).
Nucs: We aim for weekday delivery/collection to avoid delays; Saturday may be possible by arrangement and weather permitting.
Do I need to sign for deliveries?
Yes. Royal Mail Special Delivery typically requires a signature on delivery. Please ensure someone is available at the address.
Are your queens marked and/or clipped?
Marked: Yes — we mark queens to the current year colour and note the mating year for traceability.
Clipped: By request. Many customers prefer queens not clipped; we’re happy to follow your preference.
Are your nucs treated for Varroa?
We follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Nucs are monitored and treated as needed with approved UK treatments, with timing chosen to protect brood and queen health. We’ll advise recommended follow-up locally in your area.
Are your bees gentle and suitable for beginners?
Yes. Our lines are selected for docility and productivity in UK conditions. Temperament varies with weather and forage, but our aim is calm, workable bees ideal for newer and experienced beekeepers alike.
Are deposits refundable?
Deposits are refundable for 14 days or until we confirm your collection/delivery window, whichever comes first. Once scheduled, deposits become non-refundable due to the planning required for live livestock. If weather causes delays, we’ll offer an alternative date or a refund.
Do you sell nucs of bees in Dorset?
Yes — we’re a Dorset-based bee farm with multiple apiaries. Collection is from Dorset, and we can also arrange delivery options depending on your postcode and weather.
