Premium Danish Line Buckfast Virgin Queen Bees

The perfect foundation for local adaptation — grafted from elite Danish breeder queens and ready to mate in your own apiary for naturally strong, regionally adapted colonies.

Elite Breeder Lineage from Denmark

Our Buckfast Virgin Queens are grafted from Ivan Nielson’s world-renowned Himmerlandske Bie breeder queens in Denmark. These lines are among Europe’s finest — selected for hygienic behaviour, winter hardiness, gentle temperament, and high productivity.

Each virgin queen represents the next generation of proven Buckfast genetics, combining performance and resilience ideal for UK conditions.

Perfect for Local Mating & Adaptation

Once introduced and mated within your own apiary, these queens will produce offspring that inherit both the superior Buckfast traits and local adaptation from your region’s drones. This results in colonies that are naturally suited to your local forage and climate — supporting stronger, longer-lived hives.

Virgin queens are ideal for beekeepers who prefer to let nature complete the mating process, ensuring diverse genetics and improved long-term vitality.

Key Traits of the Danish Line

  • Hygienic behaviour – high resistance to brood disease and pests.
  • Nosema tolerance – tested for reduced spore levels and improved colony health.
  • Calm & gentle temperament – easy to manage, even for new beekeepers.
  • Winter hardiness – bred in Denmark’s northern climate for superior cold tolerance.
  • High productivity – excellent brood pattern and strong honey yields in the right conditions.

Natural Mating for Genetic Diversity

Virgin queens allow for natural, open mating with drones from your own area — a key factor in promoting local resilience and sustainable bee populations. The result is a colony that thrives under your local nectar flow, forage availability, and environmental pressures.

Ideal For Beekeepers & Breeders

  • Perfect for queen rearing and expanding colonies.
  • Ideal for creating locally adapted bee lines.
  • Helps reduce swarm losses and ensures continuity in colony strength.

These virgin queens provide the genetic foundation you need to build productive, docile and sustainable bee colonies for years to come.

Quality Guarantee

  • Live Arrival Guarantee – If your virgin queen arrives dead, we’ll replace her free of charge.

Each queen is carefully caged with nurse bees and dispatched in secure packaging to ensure she arrives in excellent condition, ready to introduce to your hive or mating nuc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these queens mated?

No. These are virgin queens — grafted from Danish breeder lines and ready to mate naturally in your own apiary.

Where do the genetics come from?

They are grafted from Ivan Nielson’s Himmerlandske Bie Buckfast breeder queens in Denmark — a line celebrated for winter resilience, calm temperament, and productivity.

Why use a virgin queen instead of a mated one?

Virgin queens allow natural mating with drones from your local area, giving rise to colonies that are genetically diverse and better adapted to your environment.

When should I introduce a virgin queen?

Introduce her to a queenless colony or mating nuc within a few days of emergence. Ensure conditions are warm, with plenty of young bees and a good weather window for mating flights.

Do you guarantee live arrival?

Yes. If your virgin queen arrives dead on delivery, we’ll replace her free of charge.

We will replace queens that are dead on arrival, provided they remain in their SEALED cage and are reported within 8 hours of the initial recorded delivery time. A video showing the deceased queen and your order number is required for replacement. All dead queens must be returned in their original sealed cages.

24-hour Royal Mail Special Delivery (Pre 1pm) with Signature REQUIRED. Queens are guaranteed to arrive alive. Please note, this service cannot deliver through a letterbox - £9.50.

Queens are expected to arrive the day AFTER dispatch. However, we cannot guarantee the exact day or time of delivery.

We guarantee the live arrival of your queens. If queens arrive damaged or dead, we will replace them free of charge.

Please ensure your address is 100% accurate. We are not liable for failed deliveries due to incorrect addresses or if you are unavailable to sign for your delivery.

All cancelled orders will incur a £5 restocking and payment processing fee.

We work hard as Queen breeders to maintain a consistent supply of queens, and cancellations make it challenging to accurately forecast demand throughout the year.

Additionally, our payment processing system incurs fees even when a refund is issued.

By placing an order on this website, you agree to and accept this cancellation charge.

Very helpful

I had a few questions that I wanted to speak to someone about before jumping in. I rang the number and spoke to Charlie. He answered all of my questions and we discussed a few options. I was really grateful, and reassured that I can have guidance in my first year. Order placed. Looking forward to my first nuc of bees.
