Tested F0 Buckfast Breeder Queen

Price: £550     Deposit: £100    Available: May

This Tested F0 Buckfast Breeder Queen represents the pinnacle of modern Buckfast breeding — pure foundation-generation stock (F0) bred by Dr. Peter Stöfen in Germany and open-mated at the renowned Friedrichskoog Land Mating Station. Each queen has been carefully tested and proven for performance, vitality and overwintering success within our Dorset apiaries before release.

Origin & Breeding Line

Created within Dr. Stöfen’s Buckfast-Zucht program, this queen descends directly from the prestigious DB58 (Detlev Biel) line — a benchmark for hygiene, calmness and productivity.

Breeding Line:

  • Mother Drone: Friedrichskoog
  • B58 (BZF): .22-B13l (DB) ley B601 (TR)
  • .21: B67 (BKS) hamh B365
  • .20: B148 (BKS) ins B17 (SG)
  • .19: B11 (PJ) ins B333 (PJ)

The drone mother comes from the valuable breeding work of Detlev Biel. DB58 (DB) cleared 100% of all cells in repeated hygiene tests, achieving an SMR value of 78% (verified by Dr Christoph Kaden). As with Biel’s queens, this line carries hallmark Buckfast traits including gentleness, productivity and robust health.

Breeding Mothers:

  • B19 (BZF) = .23-B356 (DB) frkg B12 (DB)
  • B41 (BZF) = .23-B356 (DB) frkg B12 (DB) es

The best queens from the established B356 (DB) drone colonies have been carefully selected for breeding. This selection reflects Dr Stöfen’s breeding programme and preserves the characteristics sought in high-quality Buckfast breeder stock.

Key Traits & Performance

  • Gentle Temperament: Calm, easy-to-handle colonies that remain steady on the comb during inspections.
  • Exceptional Productivity: High brood expansion, strong foraging drive and excellent honey yield potential.
  • Low Swarming Tendency: Bred to prioritise colony stability and sustained production.
  • Winter Hardiness: Proven overwintering ability in both Northern European and Dorset conditions.
  • Hygienic Behaviour: Strong hygienic performance within the breeding line, including 100% brood clearance and a recorded 78% SMR value in DB58.

Breeder Queen — FAQ

What is an F0 Buckfast breeder queen?
An F0 (foundation) Buckfast breeder queen is a pure foundation queen from a documented Buckfast line selected specifically for breeding rather than routine production. She is used as the maternal source for raising daughter queens due to her verified traits and pedigree.
Where was this queen mated?
At the Friedrichskoog Land Mating Station in Germany, using open mating within a drone-saturated mating area. She was not mated in Dorset.
Has she successfully overwintered?
Yes. Each queen offered has been tested and has successfully overwintered in our Dorset apiary prior to release.
Is the queen instrumentally inseminated?
No. This is an open-mated breeder queen from the Friedrichskoog mating station.
What key traits does this line exhibit?
Gentle temperament, high productivity, low swarming tendency, strong winter hardiness and excellent hygienic behaviour. The DB58 breeding line recorded 100% hygienic brood clearance and a 78% SMR value (suppressed mite reproduction).
Will a pedigree be supplied?
Yes. Breeding pedigree information will be provided, confirming the queen’s documented Buckfast lineage and Friedrichskoog mating origin.
How is the queen supplied and shipped?
Marked and clipped in a secure live-bee cage with attendants. Dispatched in protective packaging by Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed.
How should I introduce a breeder queen?
Prepare a strong, queenless recipient unit and ensure no queen cells remain. After 24–48 hours queenless, introduce the caged queen with candy, avoid disturbance for several days and verify acceptance before releasing fully.

We will replace queens that are dead on arrival, provided they remain in their SEALED cage and are reported within 8 hours of the initial recorded delivery time. A video showing the deceased queen and your order number is required for replacement. All dead queens must be returned in their original sealed cages.

24-hour Royal Mail Special Delivery (Pre 1pm) with Signature REQUIRED. Queens are guaranteed to arrive alive. Please note, this service cannot deliver through a letterbox - £9.50.

Queens are expected to arrive the day AFTER dispatch. However, we cannot guarantee the exact day or time of delivery.

We guarantee the live arrival of your queens. If queens arrive damaged or dead, we will replace them free of charge.

Please ensure your address is 100% accurate. We are not liable for failed deliveries due to incorrect addresses or if you are unavailable to sign for your delivery.

All cancelled orders will incur a £5 restocking and payment processing fee.

We work hard as Queen breeders to maintain a consistent supply of queens, and cancellations make it challenging to accurately forecast demand throughout the year.

Additionally, our payment processing system incurs fees even when a refund is issued.

By placing an order on this website, you agree to and accept this cancellation charge.
