Queens are mated at apiary sites along the Jurassic Coast. Coastal geography creates natural boundaries that allow greater influence over the resident drone population through the placement of our own production colonies.

Early Season Buckfast Queens
Early season queens provide access to mated Buckfast queens around two months earlier than is typically possible in the UK. This supports spring requeening, early splits, and planned colony expansion.
Our early season queens are produced from British Buckfast stock. Selected breeder queens are sent to Italy for mating, then imported back to the UK. Grafting and mating are carried out by experienced professional queen rearers to deliver consistent early season availability.

Virgin or Mated Buckfast Queens
Both virgin and mated Buckfast queens can be successful choices when introduced correctly. The most suitable option depends on colony size, timing, and management preference.
Virgin Buckfast Queens
A virgin queen allows selected Buckfast genetics to combine with local adaptation, as the queen mates naturally with local drone stock.
In good weather conditions, approximately seventy five percent of virgin queens successfully mate. A laying queen is often present around two weeks after introduction, depending on weather and colony strength.
Mated Buckfast Queens
Mated queens offer a straightforward option for requeening established colonies. They have already completed mating and can begin laying once accepted by the colony.
This option reduces uncertainty around mating and is well suited to larger colonies or situations where timing and predictability are important.
Marked Buckfast Queens
All Buckfast queens supplied are clearly marked before dispatch. This allows straightforward identification during introduction, inspection, and follow up checks.
