UK-Mated Carniolan Queen — FAQ

Quick answers about strain, shipping, handling and introduction.

What is a Carniolan queen and why choose UK-mated?
A Carniolan queen (Apis mellifera carnica) is known for calm temperament, rapid spring build-up, and efficient foraging. UK-mated queens are selected from proven lines and open-mated here, so they’re adapted to the British climate and management styles.
How are queens supplied and shipped?
Each queen is supplied in a ventilated cage with attendants and fondant. We offer collection in Dorset or nationwide delivery via Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1 pm. Orders are usually dispatched within 1–2 working days with tracking.
Are Carniolans suitable for beginners?
Yes. Carniolans are generally gentle and easy to handle, making them a great choice for beginners and experienced beekeepers alike.
How do I introduce the queen?
Make sure the colony is queenless, then return in 8 days and remove all queen cells. Place the new queen (in her cage with attendants) between two frames of brood. After 24 hours, return and carefully pop the tab to expose the fondant. Replace the cage between the brood frames and leave undisturbed for 7 days before checking for acceptance and eggs.
When should she start laying?
Most queens begin laying within 7–10 days after release, depending on weather and colony strength. Look for a steady pattern of eggs and young larvae on subsequent inspections.

We will replace queens that are dead on arrival, provided they remain in their SEALED cage and are reported within 8 hours of the initial recorded delivery time. A video showing the deceased queen and your order number is required for replacement. All dead queens must be returned in their original sealed cages.

24-hour Royal Mail Special Delivery (Pre 1pm) with Signature REQUIRED. Queens are guaranteed to arrive alive. Please note, this service cannot deliver through a letterbox - £9.50.

Queens are expected to arrive the day AFTER dispatch. However, we cannot guarantee the exact day or time of delivery.

We guarantee the live arrival of your queens. If queens arrive damaged or dead, we will replace them free of charge.

Please ensure your address is 100% accurate. We are not liable for failed deliveries due to incorrect addresses or if you are unavailable to sign for your delivery.

All cancelled orders will incur a £5 restocking and payment processing fee.

We work hard as Queen breeders to maintain a consistent supply of queens, and cancellations make it challenging to accurately forecast demand throughout the year.

Additionally, our payment processing system incurs fees even when a refund is issued.

By placing an order on this website, you agree to and accept this cancellation charge.

Mated and laying in 14 days!

Amazingly fast delivery of the Dorset carnolian virgin queen. All the attendants were alive and she was accepted into the predominantly buckfast nuc that had been queenless for a week or so.

She mated and had laid up all six frames in the nuc within 14 days of introduction; to the point I had to add an extension to give her more room to lay. I cannot believe how prolific she is in terms of laying. I’ve yet to see the temperament, but so far i am impressed with this queen. I will definitely be changing over to this species from this supplier in the coming years.
