Mated F1 Buckfast Queen | Early Season
Early Season Buckfast Queen Bees
Imported early-season queens, bred from UK-selected stock and mated abroad to access the season earlier.
These queens are not UK-mated and are offered in limited numbers as a practical early-season option.
What These Queens Are — and What They Are Not
These early season queens are imported mated queens.
They are not generic southern European stock, nor are they bred for Mediterranean conditions. Instead, they descend from a UK breeding programme, using UK-selected breeder and drone lines, with mating carried out abroad solely to take advantage of earlier seasonal conditions.
This approach allows reliable access to mated queens weeks before UK mating becomes viable, without changing the genetic intent of the bees.
Why Early Season Queens Exist
In the UK, reliable queen mating depends on drone maturity, weather stability, and flight conditions. Early in the season, these factors are often inconsistent, making high-quality UK mating impractical.
For beekeepers needing queens early — whether to replace winter losses, make spring splits, or build nucleus colonies — waiting for UK mating is not always an option. These queens exist to fill that early-season gap responsibly.
UK Genetic Origin
Although mated abroad, these queens originate from a UK breeding programme. Both breeder queens and drone queens are selected for traits suited to UK beekeeping, including:
- Calm temperament and manageable colony behaviour
- Strong spring build-up
- Balanced brood patterns
- Productivity under UK management systems
Why Mating Takes Place Abroad
Mating is carried out abroad to access:
- Earlier drone availability
- More consistent mating weather
- Reliable mating weeks before UK conditions allow
This is a technical decision, not a shortcut. The geography provides an earlier window for mating, allowing UK-selected queens to be available at a point in the season when UK mating is not yet dependable.
Suitability for UK Conditions
A common concern with imported queens is whether they are suitable for UK conditions. In practice, suitability is driven primarily by genetics and selection goals, not geography alone.
These queens are bred from UK-selected lines and are widely and successfully used by UK beekeepers early in the season. They perform well when introduced into UK colonies and are particularly effective for spring build-up and early colony expansion.
When These Queens Are Best Used
- Replacing winter losses early in the season
- Early spring splits
- Building nucleus colonies ahead of the main season
- Early requeening where UK-mated queens are not yet available
Early Season Imported Queens vs UK-Mated Queens
| Early Season Imported Queens | UK-Mated Queens | |
|---|---|---|
| Mating location | Abroad | United Kingdom |
| Genetic origin | UK-selected breeding lines | UK-selected breeding lines |
| Availability | Early season only | Mid to late season |
| Local mating adaptation | Moderate | Highest |
| Best use | Early build-up and spring work | Colonies established later in the UK mating season |
Limited Availability
These queens are offered in limited quantities and only early in the season. Where possible, we prioritise UK mating, and UK-mated queens remain our preferred option once conditions allow.
Our Approach
Wherever possible, we prioritise UK mating. Early-season imported queens are offered only when UK conditions do not allow reliable mating.
This approach is driven by bee welfare, mating quality, and transparency. The goal is not to replace UK-mated queens, but to provide a responsible early-season option without compromising genetic intent.
Dispatch & Guarantee

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these queens UK-mated?
No. These are imported queens and are not mated in the UK. This is stated clearly and deliberately.
Are these Italian bees?
No. These queens descend from UK-selected breeding lines. Italy is used solely as a mating location to access the early season.
Why not wait for UK-mated queens?
UK-mated queens are preferred where timing allows. Early in the season, reliable UK mating is not always possible, which is why this early-season option exists.
Which queen should I choose?
If you need a queen early in the season, these queens are an excellent option. If timing allows, UK-mated queens offer the highest level of local mating adaptation.
We will replace queens that are dead on arrival, provided they remain in their SEALED cage and are reported within 8 hours of the initial recorded delivery time. A video showing the deceased queen and your order number is required for replacement. All dead queens must be returned in their original sealed cages.
