German Breeding and Mating, Assessed in Dorset
These queens come from Dr. Peter Stöfen’s Buckfast breeding programme, incorporating Detlev Biel lines. They are open-mated at the Friedrichskoog Land Mating Station in Germany, in a drone-saturated mating area, then assessed in our Dorset apiaries.
Selection focuses on temperament, productivity, winter hardiness and hygienic behaviour. The supplied pedigree records the individual queen’s documented lineage and mating background. Ask us to confirm the available queen’s record before reserving.
Breeding-line traits and ancestry are not a guarantee of every daughter colony’s performance. Your choice of mating arrangement, management and local conditions will also influence the result.
Price, Deposit and Balance
Full queen price: £550. Deposit: £100. Remaining balance: £450. When stock is available, the deposit reserves your queen; it is part of the total price.
The balance is due at least 28 days before the agreed delivery or collection date. We will contact you to confirm arrangements and issue the balance invoice. Check the availability shown above or contact us to discuss a future queen.
Delivery and Live Arrival
Delivery is arranged around queen readiness and the agreed date. Queens are sent in protective packaging by Royal Mail Special Delivery; check any delivery charge before paying and arrange to receive the parcel promptly.
Open the outer packaging promptly and inspect her while leaving the cage unopened. If she arrives dead, contact us immediately with clear photographs of the queen in her cage. We will replace her; the cage does not normally need to be returned.
Our voluntary guarantees do not affect your statutory rights. See the full terms for the evidence and refund process.
Before You Buy a Buckfast Breeder Queen
What is an F0 breeder queen used for?
She is selected as maternal breeding stock for raising daughter queens, with documented pedigree information. This is a specialist choice for beekeepers running a queen-rearing programme. For routine requeening, compare our UK-mated F1 Buckfast queen.
Is she instrumentally inseminated or mated in Dorset?
No. She is naturally open-mated at Friedrichskoog in Germany. Her subsequent testing and overwintering take place in our Dorset apiaries.
How should I prepare for introduction?
Prepare a suitable queenless receiving unit and check for competing queen cells. Because this is valuable breeding stock, discuss your introduction plan with us before delivery. Use a method suited to the colony’s condition; acceptance cannot be guaranteed.
What does the drone-laying guarantee cover?
Our current terms allow one replacement per purchased mated queen for an eligible drone-laying claim reported before 1 August in the year of purchase. Send clear photographs of the drone brood and queen, and wait for our confirmation before taking further action. The full evidence procedure is in our full terms. For advance orders or August delivery, confirm the applicable cover with us before ordering.
What happens if I cancel my breeder-queen order?
Contact us before dispatch or collection. Our published terms retain the £100 deposit and refund payments above it, including after full payment, with no extra late-cancellation charge. Any deduction is limited to reasonable net losses and reduced or waived where appropriate; no deduction applies where a full refund is legally required. See our full terms.
Planning your next breeding season? Check availability above and discuss the queen’s pedigree and delivery with Charlie.
We will replace queens that are dead on arrival, provided they remain in their SEALED cage and are reported within 8 hours of the initial recorded delivery time. A video showing the deceased queen and your order number is required for replacement. All dead queens must be returned in their original sealed cages.
24-hour Royal Mail Special Delivery (Pre 1pm) with Signature REQUIRED. Queens are guaranteed to arrive alive. Please note, this service cannot deliver through a letterbox - £9.50.
Queens are expected to arrive the day AFTER dispatch. However, we cannot guarantee the exact day or time of delivery.
We guarantee the live arrival of your queens. If queens arrive damaged or dead, we will replace them free of charge.
Please ensure your address is 100% accurate. We are not liable for failed deliveries due to incorrect addresses or if you are unavailable to sign for your delivery.
All cancelled orders will incur a £5 restocking and payment processing fee.
We work hard as Queen breeders to maintain a consistent supply of queens, and cancellations make it challenging to accurately forecast demand throughout the year.
Additionally, our payment processing system incurs fees even when a refund is issued.
By placing an order on this website, you agree to and accept this cancellation charge.
